About Brooklyn Laundry

See Cecily Strong and David Zayas star in Oscar-, Tony Award-, and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer John Patrick Shanley's latest world-premiere play, Brooklyn Laundry. Get Brooklyn Laundry tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

Three sisters and a guy walk into the laundromat he owns — no, that's not the start of a joke, but the premise of the Brooklyn Laundry play, which Shanley also directs. This tragicomic story sees the quartet go through life's savage tricks, little things that turn out to be big things, and all the other ups and downs that come with fully being an adult.

Shanley, a Bronx native, often sets his plays in New York City, and the same is true for Brooklyn Laundry off Broadway (as the title suggests). Similarly, New York's Manhattan Theatre Club, which presents Brooklyn Laundry, has long been a theatrical home for Shanley. The nonprofit theatre company has presented nine of his previous plays, beginning with Italian American Reconciliation in 1986. MTC is also the last place Shanley directed one of his own new plays: The Portuguese Kid, starring Jason Alexander, in 2017.

Fittingly for an NYC-born playwright, Brooklyn Laundry is actually the third Shanley play going up in the city in the 2023-24 season alone. The production follows an Off-Broadway revival of his early work Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in fall 2023 and a Broadway revival of his Pulitzer- and Tony-winning drama Doubt, beginning performances just four days before Brooklyn Laundry in New York.

Aside from his prolific theatre career, Shanley is best known for writing the Oscar-winning screenplay of the film Moonstruck — another story famously set in Brooklyn.

Don’t wait for something not on the menu

See it if You enjoy stories that explore typical NYers who have been stifled by a familiar fear; hiding out instead of living life to the fullest.

Don’t see it if You don’t like stories about relationships, family and or thriving.

Delightful, Clever, Great staging, Great acting, Great writing

See it if A heartfelt play brilliantly written & performed on a creative rotating set. Bravissimi Strong,Zayas & anyone involved in the strng prdctn.*

Don’t see it if On the flip side, an unrealistic ending to a very realistic play prevented me from giving a higher score, yet worth seeing. Ends April 14th.

Charming, Witty, Wonderful leads

See it if you're looking for breezy & satisfying rom-com evening at the theater, with life lessons thrown in, relatable characters & fun revolving set

Don’t see it if you're not looking for a romantic story peppered with observations about finding love and meaning in life. Not too original, but worth seeing
