About El Niño

Eminent American composer John Adams returns to the Met after a decade-long hiatus for the company premiere of his acclaimed opera-oratorio, which incorporates sacred and secular texts in English, Spanish, and Latin, from biblical times to the present day, in an extraordinarily dramatic retelling of the Nativity. El Niño brings together three of contemporary opera’s fiercest champions, all of whom make highly anticipated company debuts: Marin Alsop, one of the great conductors of our time, who has led more than 200 new-music premieres; soprano Julia Bullock, a leading voice on and off stage; and pathbreaking bass-baritone Davóne Tines. Radiant mezzo-sopranos J’Nai Bridges and Daniela Mack take turns completing the principal trio. The moving, fully-staged new production also marks the Met debut of Lileana Blain-Cruz, resident director at Lincoln Center Theater, who received universal acclaim for her Tony-nominated 2022 production of The Skin of Our Teeth.

Artistic triumph, Breathtaking, Sublime score

See it if you like Adams' music. This is an updated nativity oratorio, presented with a marvel of staging ingenuity & poetry, powerful music & singing

Don’t see it if you don't like contemporary opera or big spectacle shows. I was blown away - one of the best & most memorable new MET productions in years.

Modern, Great staging, Great singing, Confusing, Enchanting

See it if you're interested in an operatic retelling of the Nativity pieced together from many texts; you want a "gateway" contemporary opera.

Don’t see it if you want a literal, classic portrayal of the Nativity (or are utterly unfamiliar) -- some text is thematic but not directly from the story.

Transcendent, Revolutionary

See it if new opera with visionary production, visual feast, continuous lighting FX, projections, moments of ecstasy, large dance company, appeals.

Don’t see it if you prefer museum-piece opera from the canon.

Thought-provoking, Riveting, Great staging, Ambitious, Absorbing

See it if Blain-Cruz's staging & production team serves a ravishing backdrop for Adam's multi-lingual/cultural story of the Nativity Beautiful singing

Don’t see it if Adams' oratorio uses many different styles & sources; may not please some but conductor Alsop succeeds ably in harnessing the lush motifs
