In Berlin's Kit Kat Club, audiences — alongside the club's Emcee, performer Sally Bowles, writer Cliff Bradshaw, and more — can escape the world outside for someplace where "life is beautiful." But as the clubgoers' romances and careers collide with the rise of Nazism in Germany, they must choose whether to ignore it, face it — or join it.

The August Wilson Theatre completely transforms into the club for *Cabaret* on Broadway, with immersive design and pre-show entertainment in the lobby and the theatre. These elements set Frecknall's production apart in London, where it has run since 2021. Her *Cabaret* won seven Olivier Awards there, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Musical for Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee.

The *Cabaret* musical is already beloved, of course, having had three previous revivals since its Tony Award-winning Broadway premiere in 1966. The Oscar-winning 1972 film adaptation starring Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey further cemented *Cabaret*'s place in theatre history, and the show includes some of Kander and Ebb's most iconic songs, including "Mein Herr," "Cabaret," "Wilkommen," and "Maybe This Time."

Wilkommen to the August Wilson Theatre, transformed into the Kit Kat Club for the latest revival of Kander and Ebb's classic musical. Come to the cabaret for the story of writer Cliff, performer Sally, the mysterious Emcee, and how their relationships and more clash with the rise of fascism in Germany.

*Cabaret* premiered on Broadway in 1966 and nearly swept that year's Tony Awards, taking home eight awards, including Best Musical, out of 11 nominations. Kander and Ebb won Best Composer And Lyricist (now Best Original Score), and theatre icon Harold Prince won for direction. Joel Grey, who won for playing the Emcee, went on to win an Oscar for reprising the role in the 1972 film opposite Liza Minnelli.

Since the premiere of *Cabaret* in New York, the musical returned to Broadway three more times: in 1987, 1998, and 2014. The 2024 revival premiered in London in 2021, where it still runs today. Among its seven Oliviers were Best Direction for Frecknall and Best Actor and Actress for Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley, who starred as the Emcee and Sally, respectively.

## What to watch for

- Be sure to arrive early! The production immerses audiences in the Kit Kat Club with pre-show entertainment in the lobby and the theatre, and by decorating every inch of the venue to look like the club. You'll want time to explore it all!
- Tom Scutt is not only the scenic and costume designer — common creative jobs on Broadway — but also the club designer, a unique role. He oversees the total transformation of the modern-day New York theatre into the 20th-century Berlin cabaret, on and off the stage.

- Bookwriter Joe Masteroff based the *Cabaret* musical on John Van Druten's play *I Am a Camera*, in turn based on Charles Isherwood's semi-autobiographical book *Goodbye to Berlin*. The writer Cliff is a stand-in for the author.
- The character of Sally Bowles is based on Jean Ross, a real-life war journalist and activist whom Isherwood met while she was performing as a cabaret singer in Berlin.

August Wilson Theatre - TodayTix

The August Wilson Theatre has gone through a number of name changes. The building originally opened as the Guild Theatre in 1925 and went on to be used as a Radio Playhouse (WOR Mutual Radio) from 1943 to 1950.

From the 1950s, the venue became a theatre again, operating under the name of the Anta Playhouse (aka Anta Theatre). In 1981, the building was re-christened the Virginia Theatre, before assuming its present name on October 16, 2005 — two weeks after the death of the American playwright August Wilson. Wilson became the first Black person to have a Broadway theatre named for them.

## How to get to the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway

To get to the August Wilson Theatre, take the C, E, or 1 line to 50th Street and walk two blocks; the theatre is located on 52nd Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway. Audiences can also take the M20 or M104 bus line to the 8th Ave/W 52nd St. stop.
