George Bernard Shaw’s ‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’ to be revived off Broadway this fall
The limited run will begin performances on October 12.
George Bernard Shaw's infamous play Mrs. Warren's Profession will return to the New York stage in a rare revival. David Staller, who played Mr. Praed in the show's last Off-Broadway revival at the Irish Repertory Theatre, will return to direct Gingold Theatrical Group's new Off-Broadway production at Theatre Row.
Performances begin October 12 ahead of an October 27 opening, and the play will run through November 20.
Shaw's play centers on the life and career of Kitty Warren, brothel owner and former prostitute, a career in which she thrives. Her young-adult daughter Vivie comes to visit and get to know her mother for the first time in her life. The play traces the changes in their relationship as Vivie comes to learn about her mother's profession. Shaw's work was condemned in its time for its forthright and sympathetic portrayal of sex work, but it has been revived prolifically and worldwide since its 1902 premiere.
The cast for Gingold's production of Mrs. Warren's Profession includes Tony Award winner Karen Ziemba as Mrs. Warren, along with Robert Cuccioli, David Lee Huynh, Alvin Keith, Nicole King, and Raphael Nash Thompson. Katya Collazo and Max Roll will serve as understudies.
Mrs. Warren's Profession is the third production by Gingold Theatrical Group, which is dedicated to honoring Shaw's playwriting and activism work, to be presented at Theatre Row. It follows 2019's Caesar & Cleopatra and 2018's Heartbreak House.
