Popcorn: A casting call reveals that Ben Elton's dark comedy will play Broadway in the fall.


A casting call reveals that Popcorn, Ben Elton's stage adaptation of his 1997 novel of the same name, will play Broadway in the fall of 2008, produced by Hoo R Us Productions. The drak comedy will be directed by Laurence Boswell, in his Broadway debut.

Boswell directed the London production of Popcorn that played at London's Apollo Theatre from 21 Mar 1997 to 12 Sep 1998, and won the Olivier Award for best comedy.

The comedy was later produced in Paris were it was nominated for seven Moli�re Awards (National theatre award of France).

Popcorn is about a famous director of violent films who is held at gunpoint by two of his biggest fans, the notorious Mall Murderers, who are admirers of the body count in his movies.

There has been no official announcement about the production.

Elton is a comedian, novelist, playwright and director. His plays include 'Gasping' (1990), 'Silly Cow' (1991) and 'Blast From the Past' (1998). Elton wrote the book and lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Beautiful Game,' as well as writing the book to the musicals 'We Will Rock You' and 'Tonight's the Night', and as of 2007 is the author of twelve novels. He directed the film adaptation of his novel 'Inconceivable,' which was released under the title 'Maybe Baby' (2000) starring Hugh Laurie and Joely Richardson.

Elton is currently working on the book to 'Phantom: Once Upon Another Time,' Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to Phantom of the Opera
