'The Music Man,' starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, to close on Broadway
The show will end its run in January.
The big parade is coming to an end. The Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster-led revival of The Music Man has set its Broadway closing date, playing its final performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on January 1. At that time, the show will have played 404 total performances.
This revival of Meredith Willson's classic musical was set to open on Broadway in 2020, but was postponed by the pandemic. The show finally began in December 2021 and went on to break Winter Garden box office records and receive critical acclaim.
The New York Theatre Guide review of The Music Man reads, "The production is exquisitely timed, to the heights of its above-the-title talent. Jackman is a charm attack in suspendered slacks, nimble-footed, smooth but not slick, with suave vocals and a smile as assured as a railroad... Foster's Marian is wry but not cynical, sharp but still tender, a tough shell with a golden, runny heart like an egg. The Anything Goes star brings a precise wit to the role that is relentlessly delightful."
The Music Man also reunited the creative team behind 2017's Hello, Dolly! revival, including director Jerry Zaks and choreographer Warren Carlyle. The Music Man received six Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Musical; performance nods for Jackman, Foster, and Jayne Houdyshell; and Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.

In The Music Man, a con man named Professor Harold Hill (Jackman) arrives in River City, Iowa with a plan to swindle its residents. He poses as a music teacher, selling the townsfolk uniforms and instruments and planning to leave before teaching them how to use them. He becomes slow to leave, though, after falling for the local librarian, Marian Paroo (Foster), and she hesitates to expose his con after falling for him back.
