How far would you go to experience eternal youth and glory? Experience The Picture of Dorian Gray on Broadway to find out. In this mesmerizing and highly theatrical experience, Snook plays over two dozen roles to tell Oscar Wilde’s classic story, brilliantly adapted for the stage in Kip Williams’ production.
The story revolves around a portrait of a handsome man, Dorian Gray, in his youth. Dorian soon meets Lord Henry Wotton, jumpstarting the lord’s obsession with Dorian, and, in return, Dorian’s obsession with the lord’s hedonistic world view.
Snook plays each character, and “between countless wig and costume changes, she never leaves the stage and the cameras never leave her face for the entire two-hour runtime. The physical stamina alone is impressive and staggering, notwithstanding the precision camera-work, theatricality, and 26 different parts to play,” London Theatre wrote. “Snook is an absolute marvel.”
Moving from Sydney Theatre Company to the West End and now to Broadway, the play comes riding on a wave of extraordinary reviews. Updating the story, this production relies on multiple whizzing cameras, all circling Snook, to show our obsession with the self, a notion that today is only aided by an over-reliance on technology and social media.
