About Slave Play on Broadway

Jeremy O. Harris' acclaimed drama Slave Play returns to Broadway, following celebrated runs at New York Theatre Workshop and the Golden Theatre. Robert O'Hara once again directs the production, which plays a limited eight-week engagement at the August Wilson Theatre. Slave Play tickets are available on New York Theatre Guide now.

Divided into three acts, Harris' play is both provocative and transgressive as it explores universal themes of attraction, relationships and race through the lens of four couples.

Act 1 is titled “Work” and is set a few miles south of Richmond, Virginia. Act 2 is titled “Process” and follows a modern-day therapy session. Act 3 is titled “Exorcise” and explores how our collective past manifests itself into modern-day situations.

Following its historic 12 nominations at the 74th Tony Awards — the most for any Broadway play in history — Slave Play will challenge and thrill Broadway audiences once more, venturing outside the realms of traditional Broadway plays. Slave Play is showered with plaudits, including the Rosa Parks Playwriting Award, the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, The Lotos Foundation Prize in the Arts and Sciences and the 2018 Paula Vogel Award.

This play contains nudity, sexual content, sexual violence, and racially violent language.

Ambitious, Intense, Raunchy, Thought-provoking, Resonant

See it if A promising work from a new playwright. Addresses race & sexuality in a frank and unsettling way. Uncomfortably funny, yet insightful.

Don’t see it if The play is a bit self indulgent and at times tries too hard to be shocking.

Relevant, Thought-provoking, Great acting, Great staging, Clever

See it if for something new that challenges you on the topic of race, rarely so bluntly confronted in three scenarios and a group therapy session.

Don’t see it if you are not prepared for frank sexual talk and action, including nudity and the raw feelings expressed when partners are pressed to respond.

Relevant, Funny, Great acting, Intense, Thought-provoking

See it if you can't handle disturbing plays. This will challenge you on every level. Terrific cast handles a complex script and issues full tilt.

Don’t see it if you can't sit for 2 hours, upset by graphic material, or not willing to engage. It's RAW. A lot is going on but it's not always clear.

More information about Slave Play on Broadway

Jeremy O. Harris, “a major new voice in the American theater” (Chicago Tribune), has brought back to Broadway the “raw, revelatory, and revolutionary play” (The Daily Beast) that garnered a record-breaking 12 Tony Award® nominations. Directed by two-time NAACP and Obie Award® winner Robert O’Hara, SLAVE PLAY is “one of the best and most provocative new works to show up on Broadway in years” (The New York Times). At the MacGregor Plantation, nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is as it seems. It’s an antebellum fever-dream as three interracial couples converge to rip open history at the intersection of race, love, sex, and sexuality in 21st-century America. Don’t miss this production that “reimagines the possibilities of what theater can give us” (The New York Times).
