More than 25 years after its world premiere, Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman's musical Harmony had a Drama Desk Award-winning Off-Broadway premiere — and now, the music is coming to Broadway. Get Harmony tickets on New York Theatre Guide now.
The Harmony musical is about the Comedian Harmonists, a globally successful German musical group that experienced its heyday in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The six-man ensemble was renowned for perfoming complex arrangements of classic folk tunes, popular music of the era, and all types of music in between.
Though their harmonies were smooth, their careers were not — the Harmonists' inclusion of Jewish members brought them trouble when the Nazis came to power. Harmony on Broadway relates this true story, based in part on The Comedian Harmonist Archive, curated by the late Dr. Peter Czada.
Harmony first premiered at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego in 1997. It went on to play the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia in 2003 — originally intended as a pre-Broadway tryout — and the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta in 2013. Though it did not end up playing Broadway, it finally bowed in New York with the Drama Desk Award-winning National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene (acclaimed for its 2019 production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish) in 2022.
The NYTF's production went up at the Museum of Jewish Heritage – A Living Memorial to the Holocaust. The production won Sussman the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical and earned eight Outer Critics Circle Award nominations and two Lucille Lortel Award nominations.
Harmony is the latest of many Broadway collaborations between Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The Grammy, Tony, and Emmy-winning musician and acclaimed writer presented multiple Manilow Broadway concerts and wrote music for the comedy The Madwoman of Central Park.

Some of the songs in Harmony include "Every Single Day," "Stars in the Night," and the title track. Though Barry Manilow composed the score, Harmony is not a jukebox musical; all the songs are originals written specifically for Harmony, as opposed to Manilow's pop hits.
Barry Manilow (music) and Bruce Sussman (book and lyrics) wrote Harmony. The pair have collaborated to write over 200 songs as well as multiple musicals in their 50-plus-year creative partnership.
Warren Carlyle directs and choreographs Harmony. He is a four-time Tony nominee for choreographing shows like The Music Man and Kiss Me, Kate, winning once for After Midnight.
Harmony is recommended for ages 12 and up due to themes of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, as well as some innuendos. Please note that children 4 and younger are not permitted in Broadway theatres.
Harmony finally arrives on Broadway after 25 years in the making, and its cast, music, and poignant yet thoroughly entertaining story make it worth the wait.
