This is a concert which will feature songs from a new musical being developed by Prospect. It will include an onstage jazz band (6 players) + a line up of singers. We'll do songs and have some additional text / research presented. Inspired by the life of the first major African American film director and producer, Oscar Micheaux, the Oscar Micheaux Suite is a jazz concert performance, modeled on Micheaux's biography, incorporating text from his writings as well as original songs created for The Oscar Micheaux Project. Micheaux’s ground-breaking films (from 1919-1948) focused on contemporary Black life in the first half of the 20th century, racial relationships, and the struggle of African Americans trying to achieve success. He sought to create films that would counter white portrayals of African Americans, featuring complex characters of different social classes.
