Comedian Kate Berlant returns to NYC with an encore engagement of her acclaimed comedy show, Kate, at the Connelly Theater. Get Kate Berlant: Kate tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Kate is a comedy show about Berlant's life, in which she traces the key events that got her to her current place in life. This current place and time is when she will reveal a truth that she's kept hidden until now. Berlant is deliberately vague about further details on what Kate is about, but she said in a statement, in part, "All my previous work has been a pale shadow, a humiliation, an impotent suggestion always gesturing toward, yet never quite arriving ... until now."
During the show, Berlant not only plays herself, but multiple other characters that represent key people in her life's journey.
Berlant has built an acclaimed comedy career worldwide, on both stage and screen. She has performed her comedy routines at festivals like Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Montreal Just For Laughs Festival, and New York Comedy Festival; Kate marks her first time performing live in New York in 10 years.
"I can't wait to welcome you into my home, which is the theatre," she also said in her statement about Kate off Broadway. "Although I haven't been home in a long time, it feels good to be back and I'm so grateful they kept the lights on for me. Although it is forbidden to take your shoes off in my home, I hope you will still allow yourself to shed a layer—to become vulnerable and receptive to the possibility of transformation."
Directing Berlant in Kate in New York is Bo Burnham, an Emmy Award-winning comedian, actor, director, and writer. One of his best-known comedy specials is 2021's Inside, which received critical acclaim and won three Emmy Awards. Its song "All Eyes on Me" also won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Burnham also received a slew of independent film awards for the coming-of-age movie Eighth Grade, which he wrote and directed. He has directed and produced comedy specials for Chris Rock and Jerrod Carmichael, and his own body of comedy specials includes Words, Words, Words; Make Happy; and what.
Kate Berlant's Kate is at the Connelly Theater at 220 E 4th St. between Avenues A and B. She performed the first run of her show at this venue as well.
Kate Berlant is currently in her self-titled comedy show Kate off Broadway. On screen, Berlant has had roles in the TV shows A League of Their Own, BoJack Horseman (voice only), Search Party, The Other Two, Ghosted, and Taskmaster; she won the U.S. version of the comedic game show in 2018.
