About Pictures From Home on Broadway

Nathan Lane, Danny Burstein, and Zoë Wanamaker star in Pictures From Home, a new Broadway play by Sharr White. Get Pictures From Home tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Pictures From Home play is based on an acclaimed 1992 memoir of the same name by Larry Sultan. That memoir immortalizes his parents and their family home, largely in portraits, but also in anecdotes and reflections. Sultan wanted to honor and preserve his parents with his work, but also expose how their seemingly picture-perfect appearances clashed with the harsher realities they actually lived through. Pictures From Home tells this story, of Sultan discovering his family secrets as he interviews and photographs his parents in one of his most unique projects.

White uses some text of from Sultan's book in Pictures From Home on Broadway, as well as information from interviews with Sultan's widow. (Sultan died in 2009.) However, most of the text is fully original.

Pictures From Home in New York is the first full-fledged production of the play; it received readings in New York, Cape Cod, and Houston. The show marks White's third Broadway play, following The Other Place and The Snow Geese, both of which premiered in 2013.

Playing Sultan is Danny Burstein, a 2020 Tony Award winner for playing Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. He's been nominated for an additional six Tonys for roles in Follies, South Pacific, Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof, and more. He also appeared in White's The Snow Geese on Broadway.

Is Nathan Lane on Broadway now?

Nathan Lane is on Broadway in Pictures From Home. Lane and Zoë Wanamaker play Sultan's parents, Irving and Jean, respectively. Lane is a Broadway fixture with two dozen credits to his name; he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2008. He has won three Tonys for Angels in America, The Producers, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Also a versatile screen actor, he won a 2022 Emmy Award for Only Murders in the Building and is known for voicing Timon in The Lion King franchise, and for appearances on Modern Family, The Gilded Age, and dozens more.

Wanamaker is a stage veteran on both sides of the pond. She has been in four previous Broadway shows — Piaf, Loot, Electra, and Awake and Sing! — and received Tony nominations for all of them. Pictures From Home marks her first Broadway production since 2006. For her work in London theatre, she has received nine Olivier Award nominations and two wins.

Directing this trio in Pictures From Home on Broadway is Bartlett Sher. He's a Tony winner for directing the 2008 revival of South Pacific, and his other credits include acclaimed Broadway productions of To Kill a Mockingbird and My Fair Lady.
