The creative team behind Shucked are the cream of the crop. Songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally are behind tunes by Kacey Musgraves, Reba McEntire, Sheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, and more, and now make their Broadway debuts. Bookwriter Robert Horn won a 2019 Tony Award for writing the book for the Tootsie musical, and director Jack O'Brien is a five-time Tony Award winner for directing Hairspray, Henry VI, and all three parts of The Coast of Utopia. His other musical credits include Catch Me If You Can, The Full Monty, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
O'Brien, Clark, McAnally, and Horn first came together to create Moonshine, a country musical based on the world of the comedy variety show Hee Haw. Moonshine's 2015 world premiere in Dallas flopped, however, so the team separated from the Hee Haw brand and completely rewrote the story. This new, entirely original iteration has become Shucked on Broadway.
The Shucked musical takes place in Cob County, a town surrounded by a thick wall of corn. It sustain's the town's livelihood and (literally) keeps everyone together — until the crop begins to die. So the farmgirl Maizy ventures out to the big city of Tampa and comes back with a "corn doctor" to help save the town. But he might have a husk around his true identity.
Shucked premiered in 2022 at Salt Lake City, Utah's Pioneer Theatre Company. Most of the Utah cast transferred to Broadway with the show, including Caroline Innerbichler, John Behlmann, Andrew Durand, and Alex Newell.
Alex Newell is an actor and singer known for starring on Glee as Unique Adams and on Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist as Mo. Newell previously starred on Broadway as Asaka in Once on This Island, and in Shucked, they play Lulu, Maizy's worldly cousin.
