The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show delights audiences of all ages with the story of the title animal who munches on all the fruit he can find on the way to becoming a butterfly. Along with this story, the stage play incorporates three other of Carle's books: The Very Lonely Firefly, 10 Little Rubber Ducks, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

The characters from all four tales come alive with puppets whose designs mimic Carle's trailblazing, vivid collage illustration style. Intricate life-size puppetry is a signature of Rockefeller Productions's children's shows, which also include the critically acclaimed Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Adaptation and Sesame Street: The Musical.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show premiered in New York in 2016, returning for a second limited engagement in 2018. The book came out much earlier, in 1969, and won multiple literature and graphic design awards around the world. As of 2020, is was one of the top 10 most-checked-out books of all time at the New York Public Library.

Carle's story has since become a classic, praised for teaching children about counting, days of the week, food, and the butterfly life cycle.
