In 1983, Vy Higginsen and her husband, Ken Wydro, co-wrote the script for what would become one of the most influential Black Gospel musicals of our time: Mama, I Want to Sing! The inspiring story is based on the life of Vy's sister, the renowned soul and R&B singer, Doris Troy. The success of the historic musical served as the catalyst for the creation of the Mama Foundation—a Harlem cultural organization dedicated to uplifting Black musical treasures of gospel, jazz, and R&B.
