Playwright Julia Izumi and director Jenny Koons make their Playwrights Horizons debut with the world premiere of Regretfully, So the Birds Are. Get Regretfully, So the Birds Are tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

The Regretfully, So the Birds Are play centers on three adopted siblings: Mora, Neel, and Illy Whistler. They all have journeys ahead of them: Mora to find her birth mother, Neel to find himself after realizing he's tone-deaf, and Illy to stay put and hang onto a piece of the sky she's bought. But their messy family — including a mother who's committed arson and murder, a father who's a snowman, and a relationship between Illy and Neel. At once a farce and a tragedy, Regretfully, So the Birds Are explores Asian American identities and the dark sides of trying to find one's identity.

Izumi makes her Off-Broadway debut with Regretfully, So the Birds Are in New York, but her plays have received readings and productions at major theatre institutions across the country, including Manhattan Theatre Club, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and Williamstown Theatre Festival. Her play miku, and the gods. received an honorable mention from the Kilroys List, an annual recognition of outstanding, yet-unproduced works by non-male playwrights.

Directing Regretfully, So the Birds Are off Broadway is Jenny Koons, also in her Off-Broadway debut. She is known for directing and choreographing the Pasadena Playhouse production of the Broadway musical Head Over Heels, starring Lea DeLaria, George Salazar, and Alaska 5000. In New York, she has directed shows including A Midsummer Night’s Dream for The Public Theater's Mobile Unit, which presents free Shakespeare productions at community centers, homeless shelters, and prisons throughout New York.
