Step back into the Roaring Twenties in this immersive production of The Great Gatsby, coming to America from a hit run in London. Get The Great Gatsby tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The Great Gatsby play invites audiences to be guests at one of Jay Gatsby's lavish parties. A portion of the Park Central Hotel New York has been converted into Gatsby's Mansion, where attendees are greeted by jazz, liquor, excitement, and excess in every form. Within the room are the characters from F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel — the rich and beautiful Daisy Buchanan, her husband Tom, wry narrator Nick Carraway, and of course, Gatsby himself.
Audiences watch scenes from The Great Gatsby unfold and can even interact with the characters in groups or one-on-one in various spaces. Attendees may just observe if they do not wish to interact; they are also encouraged, but not required, to wear 1920s-inspired attire.
Before this immersive The Great Gatsby came to New York, adapter/director Alexander Wright co-conceived the show with Brian Hook while running a pub in London. The show went on to run for seven years in London, making it the longest running immersive production there. The Great Gatsby has since been translated into two other languages and been performed in Ireland, South Korea, and Belgium, showing the worldwide appeal of Fitzgerald's story.
Fitzgerald first published The Great Gatsby in 1925, about a mysterious billionaire who, pining for the unavailable Daisy, throws his riches around in the hopes of winning her love. The book has since become a classic, earning the title of a Great American Novel and continuing to be ever-present in classrooms and in pop culture.
Most notably, The Great Gatsby received a 2013 film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Fitzgerald's story has also appeared on stage multiple times before this iteration of The Great Gatsby off Broadway. The first stage adaptation was a 1926 Broadway play by Owen Davis; more recently, theatre company Elevator Repair Service created an eight-hour dramatization of the entire novel, Gatz, that received widespread acclaim.
