About The Shark Is Broken on Broadway

Swim on over to the Golden Theatre for The Shark Is Broken on Broadway, the hit comedy play coming to New York after runs in Scotland, England, and Canada. Get The Shark Is Broken tickets, and discover the behind-the-scenes story of Jaws that made as many waves as the movie itself.

The Shark Is Broken play takes place on Martha's Vineyard in 1974, where Jaws filming is delayed — again — thanks to foul weather and yet another malfunction of the mechanical shark that's more frustrating than frightening. Crammed onto a tiny boat while waiting for production to resume, the three lead actors — Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider — are losing their patience, and a famous feud erupts.

The show, by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, is a juicy and funny look into on-set drama, but it also honors Jaws's landmark success when the movie looked likely to sink. Jaws (1975) was Steven Spielberg's second feature film, and it came out during the summer, a then-unpopular time for movie premieres. But Jaws ended up being the first "summer blockbuster movie" as we know it, and John Williams's score became instantly iconic.

The Shark Is Broken is also a tribute the trio of lead actors, particularly Robert Shaw. Co-writer Ian Shaw is Robert's son, and he has played his father in all iterations of The Shark Is Broken, beginning at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2019.

The show went on to a 2021 run in London's West End, where it earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play. The North American premiere took place in 2022 in Toronto ahead of its Broadway premiere.
