Escape the chaos. Embrace the magic.
Three individuals stand on stage, with one in front and two behind, wearing a mix of formal and casual attire. The stage is dimly lit with various props around.
A man with a beard plays an electric guitar on a bar counter, while another person in a dark jacket leans against the bar listening, under a red-lit marquee.

About Three Houses

Get Three Houses tickets and witness the exciting return of composer, lyricist, and librettist Dave Malloy (a three-time Tony Award nominee for Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812) and director/choreographer Annie Tippe (Ghost Quartet) to Signature Theatre following their extended, smash hit, Octet. Get Three Houses on New York Theatre Guide.

For their last Signature musical in 2019, Malloy won an Obie Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and Drama Desk Award, so audiences are in for a treat as every score Malloy accomplishes reinvents his artistic style and gleefully pushes the boundaries of the form.

Experience Three Houses off Broadway and see three distinct narratives intertwine: Sadie is hiding in New Mexico, Susan has absconded to Latvia, and Beckett is just yearning for Ireland. All are alone, all are haunted by their ancestors — and all three somehow also hear the Big Bad Wolf coming for their new homes.

Poetic and magical, Three Houses is a post-pandemic play about the end of the world, how we rediscover home, and the vital need for hope and community. Taking on the style and exuberance of an open mic night and featuring a sterling cast of six, Three Houses is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Malloy often works with performers again and again who are wise interpreters of his music, and his newest show is no different: performer Scott Stangland appeared on Broadway in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, and two other Three Houses cast members, J.D. Mollison and Margo Seibert, were previously in Octet at Signature, and that company won a Drama Desk Special Ensemble Award. Malloy’s musicals tend to look at fractured communities, so audiences will get to see the family of stars he’s worked with over his award-winning career on the Signature stage. Quirky, Great writing, Great singing, Great staging, Clever

See it if you like new-style musicals - this one set in a bar with an open mic to reveal three tales related to the pandemic. Non stop action.

Don’t see it if you are looking for a musical with lots of fancy costumes, sets and songs that you will be humming for the rest of the day.

3 people sing their stories of pandemic isolation, Set at open mike night at a mystic dreamworld cafe, Gorgeous singing of an ambitious sung-thru score, Five piece on-stage orchestra, Repetitious structure weakens its impact

See it if you’d like a new, arty & ambitious musical about three people’s experiences of loss, isolation & mental illness during the pandemic.

Don’t see it if you’re not up for essentially 3 separate sung vignettes that combine dark themes with whimsy (there are puppets) & some catchy tunes.
