About Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy

The New York Times named the play’s acclaimed virtual premiere a Critic's Pick and one of the 10 best productions of 2020. The New York City debut, under the direction of Tony Award winner Darko Tresnjak (Tony-winning Best Musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Anastasia), brings this story of the internet age to life — no Wi-fi required.

What is Russian Troll Farm about?

Sarah Gancher’s comedy unfolds against the backdrop of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, in which the IRA meddled to support Russia's interests, blending workplace humor with political insight. Follow the daily lives of professional dis-content creators, from the creation of their online personas to the conflicts they orchestrate, exposing the allure and danger of trolling for your country. All while trying to win a microwave in an office raffle.

Russian Troll Farm off Broadway questions the impact of a profession based on deception, exploring how someone’s identity shifts when they assume a new persona for professional reasons. Amid such questions, even decisions about where to order lunch become pivotal moments.

Is Russian Troll Farm based on a true story?

Russia’s real-life Internet Research Agency gained notoriety for its involvement in the 2016 U.S. election, as it purposely worked to drum up political division and unrest. Founded in 2013, the Agency continued its operations well after the 2016 U.S. election, also focusing on domestic matters, including support for Vladimir Putin and criticisms of Ukraine. Following significant scrutiny and legal action, the agency shut down in July 2023.
