Celebrated Broadway veteran Graciela Daniele's story comes alive in The Gardens of Anuncia, a beautiful tango-infused musical Daniele co-created with five-time Tony Award nominee Michael John LaChiusa. Get The Gardens of Anuncia tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
The title character of Anuncia is the stand-in for Daniele in The Gardens of Anuncia musical. As she tends her country house's garden, she looks back on the women who supported and encouraged her artistic dreams, and the sacrifices they made for her, all in 1940s Perón-era Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Daniele's life in New York is much better known. She's been on the Broadway scene since 1964, when she made her debut in a musical called What Makes Sammy Run? She went on to establish a career as a director and choreographer, doing both for Annie Get Your Gun and Once on This Island, and choreographing multiple shows including Ragtime and The Visit.
Naturally, she also directs and co-choreographs (with Alex Sanchez) The Gardens of Anuncia off Broadway, her fifth collaboration with LaChiusa at Lincoln Center. She previously directed and choreographed his Broadway musical Marie Christine (which earned five Tony Award nominations), and the two also collaborated on Hello Again, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, and Bernarda Alba. LaChiusa is also best known for penning the 2000 Broadway musical The Wild Party.
The Gardens of Anuncia premiered at the Old Globe in San Diego, and for the New York premiere, Priscilla Lopez plays the title role. The celebrated performer is best known for starring in A Chorus Line on Broadway, and she appeared on the Lincoln Center stage in 2022 in The Skin of Our Teeth.
