Experience The Counter off Broadway. A funny, surprising, and touching new play — and the winner of the esteemed Edgerton Foundation New Play Award — The Counter takes place in a nondescript small town. A waitress works at the local diner where she serves a regular the same coffee each day. An unlikely friendship and unique intimacy develops over time, culminating in a striking and unusual ask: when the regular asks the waitress for a shocking favor, their lives will change forever.

A beautiful rumination on the little interactions that give our lives meaning, The Counter is a special and timeless play from an exciting voice. After the success of her plays Too Much, Too Much, Too Many and Napoli, Brooklyn, Kennedy now teams up with Cromer, a master of directing intimate plays. A Lortel and Obie award winner who burst onto the scene with his gorgeous revival of Our Town, Cromer is no stranger to building community on stage. Cromer’s Tony-nominated hit The Sound Inside also explored the distinct dynamic between a professor and her student, and now he shares his gift for building trust between people from different worlds again in this new play.

As the waitress contemplates her regular customer’s ask, each begins to share their darkest secrets and see new versions of each other — and themselves. Tickets to The Counter will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon.
