The Color Purple actress and Tony Award winner LaChanze, a Broadway star known for her stellar voice and acting chops, now makes her directing debut with Wine in the Wilderness at Classic Stage Company off Broadway. Audiences may remember the playwright, Alice Childress, whose Trouble in Mind made its Broadway debut in 2021; New York Theatre Guide gave that hit show a five-star review. Our critic wrote it “pulsates with such vitality that it feels like it was written yesterday.”

Now, audiences can experience another work from Childress’s pivotal body of work that explored the modern African American experience. In Wine in the Wilderness, artist Bill Jameson meets his match with Tomorrow Marie, a model who will complete his triptych on Black womanhood. Just as Bill is ready to get to work and finish the job, he learns Tomorrow is no ordinary muse, and she’s about to give him more than he ever bargained for. Set during the 1964 Harlem riot on a sweltering summer night, Wine in the Wilderness is a rarely performed play from the singular Childress.

LaChanze starred in Trouble in Mind, making her the perfect artist to interpret Childress’s play in her New York directing debut.
