Set sail for laughs and toe-tapping tunes all on the high seas, and experience Pirates! The Penzance Musical on Broadway unlike you've never seen it before: set in New Orleans and with a bluesy flair.
The Pirates of Penzance, an iconic work first staged in 1897, follows young Frederic, released from his apprenticeship at age 21 to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets a major general’s daughter and the two instantly fall in love. However, Frederick learns that he was born on a leap day, technically changing his age. Now, he must serve aboard for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic’s only solace is that his lover agrees to wait for him faithfully.
The pirate ship comedy is now set in Nola, infusing the show with a jazzy energy complete with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter stylings. Favorite characters from the tongue-twisting Major-General to the rabble-rousing Pirate King — plus the newly-imagined young lovers, daring daughters, footloose pirates, and fleet-footed police — will all be aboard for a shipload of musical comedy. Delight abounds to dazzle first-timers and Gilbert and Sullivan aficionados alike.
Joining the star-studded creative team are Warren Carlyle (Kiss Me, Kate), who choreographs with a hilarious new adaptation by Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) plus musical director Joseph Joubert (Caroline, or Change).
