Rabbit Summer is the story of Ruby and Wilson, a couple that can be described as the epitome of “black love”—they have great jobs, a beautiful home, a wonderful child and are working on bringing another into the world. At the time of the play, Ruby’s longtime friend, Claire, has just become a recognizable statistic: She has just lost her black husband, who was unarmed, to the quick trigger of a white cop.
At the same time, Wilson, a police officer in profession, is ignoring the controversy of his job and is attempting to uphold the idealized image of a perfect marriage. He smiles through all of his pain in an attempt to be the perfect man while Ruby wishes he would share some of his pain with her. Ruby, tired of feeling helpless and trapped in her “Huxtable-like existence,” pushes Wilson to break out of his plastic shell and unpack his legacy of false manhood while, unbeknownst to her husband, she hatches a secret plan to fix the American gun problem.
