About Appropriate on Broadway

Two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow Branden Jacobs-Jenkins makes his Broadway debut with his singular, explosive family drama Appropriate, winner of the Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Play and Best Actress for Sarah Paulson. Join the gathering and get Appropriate tickets through June 30 only.

In the Appropriate play, the estranged members of the Lafayette clan all return totheir crumbling old plantation home in Arkansas to grieve the loss of their father and settle his accounts. As the family members all sift through a lifetime of hoarded mementos and junk, the sudden discovery of a graphic relic descends the family into a dark spiral of crackling confrontations, repressed histories, and regret. Jacobs-Jenkins’s searing and timely drama is one of this season’s most critically acclaimed plays.

Emmy Award winner Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story, American Crime Story) leads the cast alongside Emmy nominee Elle Fanning (The Great) and Golden Globe nominee Corey Stoll (House of Cards). Drama Desk and Obie Award winner Lila Neugebauer, another acclaimed theatre veteran, directs the show after staging the original Off-Broadway production.

The play marks many special occasions: Appropriate on Broadway is part of Second Stage’s 45th anniversary season and is the first time Sarah Paulson — whose New York theatre credits include The Sisters Rosensweig (1993), The Glass Menagerie (2005), and Collected Stories (2010) — has been on Broadway in 13 years.

She stars as Toni, the family’s oldest daughter, who hopes her family will spend their weekend reminiscing and reconnecting. But when Toni’s estranged brother Franz unexpectedly appears late one night, long-hidden secrets and buried resentments can’t be contained. At this particular reunion, the family won’t only be seeing one another again but also the ghosts of their past.
