Experience Othello on Broadway to see two of Hollywood’s biggest forces come together in William Shakespeare’s masterful drama. Coming to Broadway after another A-list revival of a Shakespeare play — the Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler production of Romeo + Juliet — this marks a big season for Shakespeare fans and the Bard on Broadway.
In this timeless classic, the jealousy-prone Othello is unnerved when the cunning Iago puts false ideas in his head that his wife, Desdemona, may be cheating on him. Othello, an army general, is driven mad by the voices in his head as Iago increasingly sews doubts to unravel the military leader. A story of trust, envy, and the consequences of unjustified anger, Othello endures as a cautionary tale for anyone whose ego gets ahead of their conscience.
The play’s stars are best known for the screen roles — Washington for his two Academy Award-winning turns in Glory and Training Day, Gyllenhaal in his Academy Award-nominated performance in Brokeback Mountain — but the two are also stage veterans. Leon previously directed Washington in A Raisin in the Sun and Fences, with the latter winning him a Tony Award. Gyllenhaal recently appeared on Broadway in Sea Wall/A Life, which earned him a Tony nomination, and he also sang in Sunday in the Park with George.
Brian Anthony Moreland produces this revival and is best known for also producing The Wiz. Tickets to Othello will be available soon on New York Theatre Guide.
