See Pulitzer Prize finalist Taylor Mac at Signature Theatre this spring. Written by Tony Award nominee Sarah Ruhl, the Orlando play is based on the novel of the same name by Virginia Woolf. With a reimagined story, this play is one of Ruhl’s earliest and most cherished works. See Orlando in New York in a fresh production directed by Will Davis — check back for information on Orlando tickets on New York Theatre Guide.
Jumping across years and years, Orlando stars Mac as a young courtier to Queen Elizabeth. Starting life as a man, Orlando’s notions of gender expression evolve over time and, after centuries, she lives her life as a 20th-century woman. Whimsical in tone and breathtaking in its theatricality, Orlando celebrates queer identity and features a cast of LGBTQ New York stage favorites.
Ruhl is one of the most acclaimed playwrights working today. She is a Tony Award nominee for In the Next Room, or, the Vibrator Play, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, and a winner of the esteemed MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for her comedy The Clean House. Her plays are full of wry wit and wonder; first written in 1998, Orlando has been performed around the world. Now, the play receives its first Off-Broadway production in over a dozen years. The play’s transgender director, Will Davis, is known for his clever and inventive stagings.
Mac fits into this piece as a gender-nonconforming performance artist and one of the most exciting actors working in New York today. Mac’s hit show A 24-Decade History of Popular Music was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and, per The New York Times's critic, “gave me one of the great experiences of my life.” See Orlando off Broadway — get tickets on New York Theatre Guide soon.
