Get Vladimir tickets and experience a haunting world premiere about dissent and deceit in modern Russia. Erika Sheffer's new play is an explosive look at the lengths one journalist will go to uncover the truth in a country where it’s always shrouded, and Daniel Sullivan, a Tony Award winner for directing Proof, stages the production. Experience Vladimir off Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club’s New York City Center Stage I. Playing for a limited time only this fall, Vladimir follows an independent journalist covering Putin’s first term in office. Struggling to maintain her sanity in increasingly hostile conditions, she finally finds herself on the brink of an enormous exposé. However, the closer she gets to breaking it, the closer she is to danger, and soon it’s not just her who is flirting with peril — her sources are becoming targets as well.
Worst of all is her compounding self-doubt: when all is said, done, and published, will her story even have a lasting impact in a country where the news is sanctioned and dissidents are exiled? Vladimir shines a light on the bravery of ordinary people trying to make a difference in a country whose dictatorship shows no end in sight.
Sheffer is the recipient of The Vineyard’s Paula Vogel Playwriting Award. Her Moscow-set play, a reflection on Putin’s rise to power, and the tactics he has used to maintain it, speaks to Russia’s current moment and the history that has led to it. Probing in its questions and fast-paced to keep audiences on the edge of their seat, the play is a vital call for justice and a timely reminder of the importance of a free press and free speech.
