Get Eurydice tickets to see Stranger Things star Maya Hawke make her Off-Broadway debut in Sarah Ruhl’s beloved adaptation of the famed Greek myth. Lyrical, intimate, and highly imaginative, Ruhl’s take on this ancient tale helped cement her as one of contemporary theatre’s most vital voices, and now the play, one of the writer’s most popular and produced, comes to Signature Theatre for a limited run starting this spring.
Experience Eurydice off Broadway and see MacArthur “Genius,” Tony Award nominee, and Pulitzer Prize finalist Ruhl’s thrilling reinvention of the myth of Eurydice, Orpheus, and the Chorus of Stones. Chronicling the eternal love between a godly musician Orpheus and his wife, Eurydice, this play follows its heroine to the underworld and back — where she must decide between coming back to life with Orpheus or staying down below with her deceased father. Eurydice offers a unique rumination on grief, a father’s love, and the magical potential of minimal, charmed theatricality.
Ruhl’s work inspired an opera of the same name that had its New York premiere at The Met last season, and the myth of Eurydice is also now seen on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning Hadestown. No familiarity with this grand story is needed to appreciate Ruhl’s version, which centers Eurydice’s story and focuses on her relationship with her deceased father, mirroring Ruhl’s own experience with loss.
Eurydice premiered in 2003 and has endured as one of Ruhl’s most treasured texts. Obie Award winner Les Waters (The Christians, The Thin Place) returns to direct this production after working on it multiple times at Berkeley Rep, Yale Rep, and then in New York at Second Stage, where it was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. Following that premiere, The New York Times called Eurydice “a wonderful new play.”
Take a trip to the underworld and experience a love that has lasted centuries.
