Experience Bad Kreyòl off Broadway and see a world premiere play from Morisseau, a Tony Award nominee and Obie Award winner for Skeleton Crew. A gorgeous new play, directed by Tiffany Nichole Greene, about interrogating cultural identity and global impact, this drama follows Simone, a first-generation Haitian American, and her cousin Gigi, who was born and raised in Haiti. The two cousins come together to obey their grandmother’s dying wish: for the women to finally reconnect. Reuniting does not always mean rekindling, however, as the untimely meet-up unearths long-buried issues revolving around family identity and how much of a homeland you can claim.
A powerful and intimate story about immigration, family, and the fraught relationships between two colonized countries, Bad Kreyòl highlights a unique pilgrimage as Simone travels back to her ancestral land that provides not so much a warm welcome as it does an eye-opening experience — for her and Gigi.
Morisseau is one of today’s buzziest playwrights and has enjoyed premiers at The Public, Lincoln Center, the Atlantic, and now Signature, where she has been a resident playwright for multiple seasons. Her play Skeleton Crew was a Drama League Award nominee and a New York Times Critic’s Pick, where that paper called the script “adroitly built and written.”
Now, the promising playwright caps off her Signature tenure with a stunning new work, one that moves beyond her Detroit cycle, which focused on her hometown, and now travels further away to her family’s native land. Tickets to Bad Kreyòl are available now on New York Theatre Guide.
