About Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole

Get Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole tickets and see a riveting new play about the making of an icon. Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole plays off Broadway this season in a New York premiere by Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo (Rustin) and New York Theatre Workshop Artistic Director Patricia McGregor. Witness the birth of a star — Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole tickets will be available on New York Theatre Guide soon.

Featuring Nat’s hit songs like “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day,” “Smile,” and “Unforgettable,” Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole traces the final taping of the singer’s groundbreaking NBC variety show. Despite being the voice that built Capitol Records, Nat was not taken as seriously on TV because of the color of his skin. The show could not find a sponsor, and cancellation was imminent. He could have bowed out peacefully, but his friend Sammy Davis Jr. said he should “go out with a bang.”

What follows is a singular and thrilling exploration of one man’s defiance and perseverance in the face of adversity. Emmy Award nominee Dulé Hill (The West Wing, Psych) stars as Nat “King” Cole with Tony Award nominee Daniel J. Watts (The Refuge Plays, Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) as Sammy Davis Jr in this new play created by Domingo and McGregor.

McGregor also directs this work at New York Theatre Workshop this spring. Domingo has been making a splash on TV and in film, but he is a theatre legend in his own right: he appeared on Broadway in Well and Passing Strange before gaining acclaim for his role as Mr. Bones in The Scottsboro Boys. He reprised the role in the 2014 West End production and was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. In 2018, he wrote the book for the Broadway musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.

Now, audiences can see his newest work come to life. Tickets to Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole in New York will be available soon.
