About New York, New York on Broadway

A new Kander and Ebb musical loosely based on Martin Scorsese's New York, New York film has garnered nine Tony Award nominations. Get New York, New York tickets now.

The New York, New York musical has the same setting as Scorsese's film: 1946 New York City, just after the second World War. It also features multiple Kander and Ebb tunes that the movie made famous, including the title track, which Frank Sinatra turned into a mainstream hit. That is where the similarities end.

What is the New York, New York musical about?

Scorsese's film centered on a troubled couple played by Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro, but neither of their characters appear in the stage adaptation. This version, written by David Thompson and Sharon Washington, features a new set of characters that includes artists, musicians, actors, and more trying to make it big as the city bounces back. The show promises a big-band sound (which is apt for the 1940s), with a large cast and equally large-scale choreography.

Director/choreographer Susan Stroman is a natural fit for such a show; she's known for her work on other high-energy mega-musicals like The Music Man and Bullets Over Broadway. She is a five-time Tony winner, four times for choreography (The Producers, Contact, Show Boat, Crazy for You) and once for direction (The Producers). In 2022, she made her Broadway straight play directing debut with POTUS.

Who are Kander and Ebb?

John Kander and the late Fred Ebb are one of the most famous writing duos in musical theatre history, having penned musicals like Chicago and Cabaret. New York, New York on Broadway will include their classic hits alongside some new tunes, composed by Kander and featuring lyrics by Hamilton, In the Heights, and Encanto songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.
