About Mary Jane on Broadway

Oscar nominee and 2024 Tony Award nominee Rachel McAdams makes her Broadway debut in the critically acclaimed, heart-touching play Mary Jane, a three-time Tony nominee, including for Best Play, by Pulitzer and Tony nominee Amy Herzog. Get Mary Jane tickets on New York Theatre Guide.

McAdams plays the title role, the mother of a toddler with cerebral palsy, in the Mary Jane play. Her life revolves around babysitters, doctor appointments, and being there for her son from emergency to emergency while keeping a job.

Her unlikely support system of women — including her building superintendent, a Buddhist nun, and a Facebook friend — support each other and provide wisdom and humor through grief. Through struggles with her faith and the wearying challenges of caregiving, Mary Jane still holds onto hope, joy, and selflessness.

Mary Jane premiered in 2017 at the Yale Repertory Theatre and then off Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop. The show received rave reviews, with the New York Times calling it “the most profound of Herzog’s many fine plays.” Carrie Coon played the role of Mary Jane, earning an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award nomination for her performance.

Now, another celebrated screen actress tackles the star part. McAdams is best known for her Academy Award-nominated work in Spotlight and her roles in The Notebook, Mean Girls, and Sherlock Holmes.
