Brandon Victor Dixon & more to star in The New Group musical Black No More
The world premiere of Black No More is expected to begin performances at Pershing Square Signature Center in October 2020.
The New Group will present a world premiere musical to kick off its 2020-2021 Off-Broadway season at Pershing Square Signature Center in October 2020.
Based on George S. Schuyler's 1931 satirical Harlem Renaissance-era novel, Black No More is a modern musical adaptation which features a book by Academy Award winner John Ridley and music & lyrics by Tarik Trotter.
Synopsis: "It's June 1928 in New York City, and Howard University graduate Dr. Junius Crookman promotes a mysterious machine that promises to remove the burden of race from any person of color by turning them white — Crookman's plan to "solve the American race problem." Black No More is an examination of race, identity and the very nature of love."
Grammy, Emmy & two-time Tony Award nominee Brandon Victor Dixon returns to the New York stage in a cast that will also include Jennifer Damiano, Tamika Lawrence, Theo Stockman, and composer Tarik Trotter. Dixon was last seen treading the boards Off-Broadway in the 2017 Signature Theatre production of The Red Letter Plays: F*cking A, also at Pershing Square Signature Center. SInce then, he has starred as Terry Silver in the hit series "Power" on Starz, as Tom Collins in "Rent: Live" on Fox, and won national acclaim for his performance as Judas Iscariot in "Jesus Christ Superstar: Live in Concert" on NBC.
Black No More will be helmed by Scott Elliott, The New Group's Artistic Director, and will feature choreography by Bill T. Jones and music supervision, orchestrations & vocal arrangements by Daryl Waters.
Performances will take place on The Irene Diamond Stage with exact dates, as well as additional casting and creative team information, still to be announced.
The New Group's current world premiere musical Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice continues its run at Pershing Square Signature Center through March 22, 2020.
