Ciara Renée to star as Jenna in 'Waitress' on Broadway
The musical is running at the Barrymore Theatre through January 9.
UPDATE: Ciara Renée will play the role of Jenna beginning November 25, rather than November 29 as originally announced.
Another actress will be opening up the diner soon! Ciara Renée is set to assume the role of Jenna in Waitress from November 25. She follows Sugarland star Jennifer Nettles, who will play her final performance in the role on November 24.
Renée was last seen on Broadway as Elsa in Frozen, a role she played from February 2020 until the pandemic shut down Broadway theatres the next month. Renée is also known for her Broadway roles as the Witch in Big Fish in 2013 (her Broadway debut) and the Leading Player in the most recent revival of Pippin in 2014. She is also set to star in the independent movies Paint (opposite Owen Wilson) and Deborah, which both recently wrapped filming.
Waitress first opened on Broadway in 2016 and ran at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre for almost four years, until January 2020. A new production opened at the Barrymore Theatre on September 2, 2021, with Waitress composer/lyricist Sara Bareilles in the leading role. The musical follows an expert pie chef named Jenna who is working in a small-town diner and stuck in a loveless marriage. All at once, she discovers she's pregnant and learns of a pie-baking contest, which she sees as the ticket to a better life for her and her child.
Waitress will run until January 9, 2022.
