The full cast has been announced for the New York premiere of Jez Butterworth’s new play The Hills of California, directed by Sam Mendes. The show opens on September 29 at the Broadhurst Theatre.

The full Broadway company will include Bryan Dick, Richard Short, David Wilson Barnes, Richard Lumsden, Ta’Rea Campbell, Sawyer Barth, Ellyn Heald, Cameron Scoggins, and Max Roll. The company understudies are Erin Rose Doyle, Sadie Veach, Liz Pearce, Jessica Baglow, Liam Bixby, and Q. Smith.

As previously announced, the cast will include the play’s leading London cast members, including Olivier Award winner and Tony nominee Laura Donnelly as Joan/Veronica, Leanne Best as Gloria, Ophelia Lovibond as Ruby, Helena Wilson as Jill, Nancy Allsop as Young Gloria, Sophia Ally as Young Ruby, Lara McDonnell as Young Joan, and Nicola Turner as Young Jill.

Butterworth's play follows the Webb sisters – Jill, Ruby, Gloria, and Joan – as they gather in the parlour of their family's guest house run, with their mother hidden away unwell in an upstairs room. The production swings between the present and the sisters’ childhood in the 1950s.

In a five-star review for London Theatre, the critic said: "The play marks a reunion between Jez Butterworth and director Sam Mendes, with whom he collaborated on The Ferryman, about The Troubles, in 2017. Together, they have developed a slick production in which not a word, not even a breath, is wasted."

The creative team includes scenic and costume designer Rob Howell, lighting designer Natasha Chivers, choreographer Ellen Kane, musical supervisor and arranger Candida Caldicot, and composer, sound designer, and arranger Nick Powell.
