'Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole' sets full Off-Broadway cast and creative team
New York Theatre Workshop produces the new show about the iconic musician and TV host, featuring Cole's songs and co-written by Oscar nominee Colman Domingo.
New York Theatre Workshop has set the complete cast for its upcoming production of Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole, running from April 30 to June 15 only. Opening night is May 19.
Joining the previously announced Emmy Award nominee Dulé Hill as Nat King Cole and Tony Award nominee Daniel J. Watts as Sammy Davis Jr. are Krystal Joy Brown, Kathy Fitzgerald, Christopher Ryan Grant, Ruby Lewis, Elliott Mattox, Kenita Miller, Mekhi Richardson, and Walter Russell III.
Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole takes place on the day of final broadcast of Cole's groundbreaking NBC variety show, which shutters as Madison Avenue sponsors will not back America's first Black TV host. Cole has to decide whether to step quietly out of the spotlight or, per the advice of Sammy Davis Jr., "go out with a bang."
The show features Cole's hit songs, including “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day,” “Smile” and “Unforgettable.” The script is written by Oscar nominee Colman Domingo and NYTW artistic director Patricia McGregor, who also directs.
Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole also features music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by John McDaniel; music direction by Lafayette Harris; choreography by Edgar Godineaux; tap choreography by Jared Grimes; scenic design by Clint Ramos; costume design by Katie O'Neill; lighting design by Stacey Derosier; sound design by Alex Hawthorn and Drew Levy; video design by David Bengali; wig design by Nikiya Mathis; and props supervision by Samantha Shoffner.
