Maria-Christina Oliveras joins 'Between Riverside and Crazy' Broadway cast
She replaces Liza Colón-Zayas in the production.
UPDATE: Gary Perez has also joined the Between Riverside and Crazy cast as of January 20, replacing original cast member Michael Rispoli.
There's a new resident on Riverside! Maria-Christina Oliveras has joined the cast of Between Riverside and Crazy on Broadway, which is running at the Hayes Theater through February 12.
Oliveras has performed in Amelie, Machinal, and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, and with the national tour of Hadestown.
Oliveras assumes the role of Church Lady from Liza Colón-Zayas, who originated the part off Broadway in 2014 and 2015, and on Broadway. The cast also includes Stephen McKinley Henderson as Pops, Common as Junior, Rosal Colón as Lulu, Victor Almanzar as Oswaldo, Elizabeth Canavan as Detective Audry O'Connor, and Michael Rispoli as Lieutenant Caro. All but Common also originated their roles off Broadway.
Between Riverside and Crazy, by Stephen Adly Guirgis, follows a group of down-and-outs struggling to hold on to their rent-controlled apartment on the Upper West Side. They fight against the law and each other, all searching for redemption and survival. Following its Off-Broadway premiere, Between Riverside and Crazy won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The five-star New York Theatre Guide review of the Broadway production reads, "In two-plus hours, Pops and a series of supporting characters slowly reveal themselves to be more than they seem... every performance feels as lived-in as the apartment."
