‘Merrily We Roll Along’ to move to Broadway with Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez
This will be the show's first Broadway revival.
UPDATE: Merrily We Roll Along will play Broadway's Hudson Theatre for 18 weeks only, beginning September 19. Additional ensemble casting has also been updated below.
It's a hit! The Off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, currently running at New York Theatre Workshop, will transfer to Broadway in fall 2023.
The Maria Friedman-directed production will feature its three current stars: Daniel Radcliffe as Charley Kringas, Jonathan Groff as Franklin Shepard, and Lindsay Mendez as Mary Flynn. They play three friends in the entertainment business whose friendship crumbles over 20 years, and the story is told in reverse.
Three additional members of the current Merrily We Roll Along cast will also transfer: Krystal Joy Brown as Gussie Carnegie, Katie Rose Clarke as Beth Shepard, and Reg Rogers as Joe Josephson.
The ensemble will include Sherz Aletaha, Leana Rae Concepcion, Morgan Kirner, Corey Mach, Talia Robinson, Amanda Rose, Jamila Sabares-Klemm, Brian Sears, Evan Alexander Smith, Christian Strange, Koray Tarhan, Vishal Vaidya, Natalie Wachen, and Jacob Keith Watson.
Merrily We Roll Along, featuring songs by Sondheim and a book by George Furth, is adapted from a same-named play by George S. Kaufman & Moss Hart. The show flopped upon its premiere in 1981, but has since been revised and become a classic.
Friedman's production premiered in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory and transferred to the West End, where it won the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The Off-Broadway transfer received acclaim as well; the four-star New York Theatre Guide review reads, "It goes from bitter to sweet. Knowing all along how badly things turn out amplifies the emotional gut punch."
The fall 2023 Merrily We Roll Along production will be the show's first Broadway revival. It is the latest of multiple Sondheim revivals as of late, including last season's Company and Assassins and this season's Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. The composer died in November 2021.
Exact dates, venue, additional casting, and creative team for Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway have yet to be announced.
