New musical 'Mexodus' to premiere off Broadway this fall
The acclaimed two-person musical, featuring live music looping, comes to Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre after previous runs in New York, Baltimore, and Berkeley.
Audible Theater will present the new musical Mexodus off Broadway this fall, beginning performances at its Minetta Lane Theatre on September 9 ahead of a September 18 opening.
Written and performed by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, Mexodus tells a lesser-known part of the history of the Underground Railroad: the story of the millions who escaped slavery by going not north, but south across the Rio Grande into Mexico.
Called a "thrilling, multicultural hip-hop history lesson" by The Washington Post, the musical features live, onstage music looping. The show previously appeared at New York Stage and Film, Baltimore Center Stage, Mosaic Theater Company of DC, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre before coming off Broadway.
Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson said in a statement: “Music is the vessel that allows us to connect this vital story to our world today, and we’re thrilled to join forces with the incredible Audible Theater and P3 Productions teams to present this New York City premiere. In reuniting with our visionary director David Mendizábal, we can’t wait to continue sharing the power and resilience at the heart of this work.”
Alongside Mendizábal, the creative team includes set designer Riw Rakkulchon, costume designer David Mendizábal, lighting designer Mextly Couzin, sound designer Mikhail Fiksel, projection designer Johnny Moreno, and choreographer Tony Thomas.
As with all Audible Theater productions, the full audio of Mexodus will be released on Audible's online streaming platform as an audio drama after the live production closes.
