'Operation Mincemeat' to open on Broadway this spring
The hit show, which won the 2024 Olivier Award for Best New Musical in London earlier this year, will begin performances at the Golden Theatre in February.
The hit London musical Operation Mincemeat will transfer to Broadway this spring, beginning performances at the Golden Theatre on February 15 ahead of a March 20 opening.
Based on a true story, Operation Mincemeat is a farcical thriller musical set in 1943, when Allied forces successfully launched a covert operation involving a stolen corpse to mislead German forces during World War II.
The Operation Mincemeat musical premiered in London's West End in 2023 after multiple runs at smaller theatres. The West End production was a critical success and earned six 2024 Olivier Award nominations, winning Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical.
The show is created by the comedy group SplitLip, consisting of David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts.
“If we had to name one single unifying influence for Operation Mincemeat, it would be the American musical comedy," the creators said in a joint statement. "The Producers, Guys & Dolls, Wicked, Avenue Q, The Book Of Mormon - we never dreamed we would even get to go see shows like these on Broadway, let alone open our show alongside them."
"Thank you to our fans, and particularly those in the U.S. for getting Operation Mincemeat here. If it gets hounded out of Broadway after one night, it will still be beyond our wildest dreams. Our producers, we’d imagine, would be less pleased.”
2023 Olivier Award nominee Robert Hastie directs, and Olivier Award nominee Jenny Arnold choreographs. Casting for Operation Mincemeat on Broadway has yet to be announced.
The real Operation Mincemeat was the basis for two British films, released in 1956 and 2021, but the musical is unaffiliated with either.
