'Prince F****t' sets Off-Broadway cast

Jordan Tannahill's new play, starting performances in May, features a queer and transgender ensemble imagining a future monarch being part of their community.

Playwrights Horizons and Soho Rep have set the complete cast for their upcoming production of Prince Faggot, a new play written by Jordan Tannahill and directed by Shayok Misha Chowdhury. Performances run at Playwrights Horizons from May 30 to July 6, with opening night on June 16.

The ensemble cast features Obie Award winner Rachel Crowl as Performer 3, Tony Award nominee K. Todd Freeman as Performer 2, six-time Obie Award winner David Greenspan as Performer 5, Mihir Kumar as Performer 1, Olivier Award nominee John McCrea as Performer 6, and N’yomi Allure Stewart as Performer 4.

The creative team includes set designer David Zinn, costume designer Montana Levi Blanco, lighting designer Isabella Byrd, sound designer and composer Lee Kinney, wig and hair designer Cookie Jordan, and dramaturg Sarah Lunnie. Intimacy coordination is by UnkleDave’s Fight-House.

Prince Faggot is a satire and speculative fiction play in which queer and trans people imagine a future monarch being part of their own community.

“We may be imagining royals in this play, but the ensemble are the leads, the protagonists, as we think through the ways colonization has shaped our lives, the ways our sexualities intersect with power, and the ways we talk about queer childhood — and why, so often, we don’t," said Tannahill in a statement. "I’ve found the way to engage in topics like this is not to shy away from them. The intent is less provocation than to speak as clearly and honestly as possible — and perhaps to ask why that can sound so provocative.”

Said Chowdhury in a statement, “Jordan has written the kind of audacious theatrical experiment that excites me most as a director. It’s a group of performers allowing themselves to inhabit characters that are usually off-limits to them, and through that act of irreverence, inviting us all to imagine a little more freely.”
