In the Broadway-debut play by Emmy nominee Leslye Headland (*Star Wars: The Acolyte*), the Dahl family reunites for Christmas dinner, significant others in tow. Tensions explode as the adult children grapple with their deeply religious upbringing, deal with the choices each other have made, and try to hang on to some holiday traditions.

Leslye Headland is a writer for the stage and screen, including the film *Sleeping with Other People*, and she has had a long career off Broadway, starting over a decade ago and including *Assistance* at Playwrights Horizons. Her latest play, *Cult of Love*, is the final one in her cycle of plays about the seven deadly sins. This new work, her long-awaited Broadway debut, focuses on pride. Growing up Christian, the playwright attributes a lot of her work to her upbringing, digging into the hilarity and absurdity of an obsession with behavior deemed sinful.

Trip Cullman has a long history of working on new plays and musicals, including *The Pain of My Belligerence, Unknown Soldier,* and *Moscow x6*. Many have been off Broadway, but he has now been directing on Broadway as well, and *Cult of Love* marks his return. This new show comes to Second Stage, a theatre known for its adventurous new plays.

## What to watch for

- The play played at Berkeley Rep, where the San Francisco Chronicle wrote the play is “boisterous and funny; family dysfunction soars.”
- Second Stage supports emerging playwrights and contemporary works, and some of their recent hits have included *Take Me Out* and *Dear Evan Hansen*.
- Leslye Headland has written for a number of TV shows including *The Acolyte, Russian Doll*, and *Terriers*.
- Trip Cullman’s work has been seen at MCC, Playwrights Horizons, and on Broadway and regionally.

In Headland’s new play, four adult children return to their childhood home, bringing all their partners along. Family traditions (including singing carols in harmony at the drop of a hat) resurface, but so do old conflicts. Wars are staged around the dinner table, and the meal is taking absolutely forever to be served. The love the siblings all have for each other might not be enough to get them through the meal, and holiday. Will they reconcile, or will this be their final Christmas all together?

A biting comedy, *Cult of Love* is Headland’s final work in a series, called “Seven Deadly Plays,” inspired by the seven deadly sins. This one tackles pride. 

Featuring a sprawling cast, the play was staged recently at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California where the San Francisco Chronicle called it “boisterous and funny — family dysfunction soars.” The play also won over Berkeleyside, writing, “With lots of humor, much wit, perceptive writing, well-crafted multi-faceted characters and a perfect sense of timing, *Cult of Love* is an outstanding play with so much meat on its bones I would happily see it again.”

Zachary John Quinto was born on&nbsp;June 2, 1977 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is perhaps best known for his role as Spock in the current Star Trek&nbsp;movie franchise, as well as his TV roles as Sylar on&nbsp;Heroes&nbsp;and as&nbsp;Dr. Oliver Thredson on American Horror Story.

Mr. Quinto was raised in Green Tree, Pennsylvania, where he&nbsp;attended Saints Simon and Jude Catholic School. He graduated from the Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh in 1995 and Carnegie Mellon University's School of Drama in 1999.

Although primarily known for his work on screen, Quinto has enjoyed a successful stage career that started in California with roles in Samuel Beckett's&nbsp;Endgame&nbsp;at the Los Angeles Odyssey Theatres in 2003. He went on to perform in Shakespeare's&nbsp;Much Ado About Nothing&nbsp;at the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival and in&nbsp;Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow&nbsp;at the Old Glove Theatre. He later&nbsp;gained great acclaim for his Off-Broadway debut as&nbsp;Louis Ironson in the 2010 revival of Tony Kushner's&nbsp;Angels in America, receiving a&nbsp;Theatre World Award for his efforts in 2011.

In 2013, he took on the role of&nbsp;Tom Wingfield in the&nbsp;American Repertory Theater's revival of Tennessee Williams'&nbsp;The Glass Menagerie,&nbsp;which led to a Broadway transfer and his Broadway debut later that same year. In February 2016, he returned off Broadway to star in MCC Theater's production of Smokefall&nbsp;at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.&nbsp;Quinto returned&nbsp;to the Broadway stage to take on the role of Harold in the 50th anniversary production of&nbsp;The Boys in the Band&nbsp;from April 30 through&nbsp;August 11, 2018.

On screen, Quinto had appeared in minor roles in various TV series, including The Others,&nbsp;CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,&nbsp;Six Feet Under,&nbsp;and Charmed&nbsp;until his big break came upon securing the recurring role of&nbsp;Adam Kaufman in Fox's hit series 24&nbsp;in 2003. He went on to appear&nbsp;in 23 episodes. His next big role would come in 2006 when he took on the role of Sylar in NBC's Heroes,&nbsp;appearing in 61 episodes through 2010. His career was launched into superstardom after landing the role of Spock in the new Star Trek&nbsp;movie franchise reboot, with the first film being released in 2009 and&nbsp;sequels Star Trek: Into Darkness&nbsp;and Star Trek: Beyond&nbsp;coming out in 2013 and 2016, respectively. The Hayes Theater, established in 1912 and located in the heart of New York City, is a notable venue for Broadway productions. Known formerly as the Little Theatre, the Helen Hayes Theatre was renamed in 1983 in honor of the acclaimed actress. Since its renovation in 2017, the Hayes has become one of the most technologically advanced, intimate Broadway houses. The Hayes Theater is situated at 240 West 44th Street, between 7th and 8th avenue. For those taking the subway, the Times Square-42nd Street station served by N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains is the closest stop. If you prefer a taxi or a ride-sharing service, simply set your destination to the theater's address. There are also numerous parking facilities within a few blocks where you can leave your car if you're driving.

Hayes Theater - TodayTix

The Hayes Theater officially opened as The Little Theatre on March 12, 1912. The building was designed by Harry Creighton Ingalls and built by Winthrop Ames, opening with John Galsworthy's play *The Pigeon*.

During the 1920s, the theatre was redesigned by Herbert J. Krapp to increase the capacity from 300 to 590. The New York Times purchased the building in 1931, converting it to a conference hall under the name of New York Times Hall.

In 1979, Martin Markinson and Donald Tick bought the theatre and renamed it in 1983 to the Helen Hayes Theatre to honor the actress. A previous theatre bearing her name was demolished in 1982 to make way for the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

On April 18, 2015, it was officially announced that Second Stage Theater had purchased the property. It was later revealed that the venue would be renamed the Hayes Theater, and it opened in spring 2018. The Hayes Theater is the smallest Broadway theatre, now with 597 seats.

## How to get to the Hayes Theater on Broadway

The Hayes Theater, located on 44th Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway, is closest to the 42nd Street - Port Authority subway stop on the A, C, and E lines. Additionally, the nearest bus stops are 8th Ave/W 46th St. on the M20 and M104 lines; 7th Ave/W. 44th St. on the M104 line; and 8th Ave/W 43rd St. on the M20, M104, and M34A-SBS lines.
