The march is coming to an end. The Broadway musical Suffs has set its closing date, playing its final performance at the Music Box Theatre on January 5, 2025. At the time of closing, the show will have played 325 total performances.

Suffs follows lesser-known pioneers of the women’s suffrage movement such as Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, Inez Milholland, and Carrie Chapman Catt. The musical takes place in the lead-up to the passage of the 19th Amendment, showing not just the progress these women made, but the infighting and differences in race, class, and age that they had to overcome to achieve their goals.

Suffs “has memorable music, star-making performances, and an inspiring message with moments that tug at the heartstrings,” New York Theatre Guide’s critic wrote in a review of the Broadway production.

The show is entirely created by Shaina Taub, who won 2024 Tony Awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score for the show and became the first woman to ever independently win both awards in the same theatre season. Suffs premiered off Broadway at The Public Theater in 2022 before opening on Broadway in March.

Leigh Silverman directed both productions, and the Broadway transfer is co-produced by Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai alongside lead producers Jill Furman and Rachel Sussman. The show will launch a national tour in September 2025.

“Bringing the story of the suffs to the stage has been an honor and we are deeply grateful to our cast and company,” said Furman and Sussman in a statement. “Watching audiences encounter the inspiring women of Suffs, many of whom they had never heard of before, has been extremely profound, especially in this election season. We are thrilled to have played a part in giving new life to the suffragists' fight for the vote through Shaina Taub's award-winning book and score and look forward to sharing it with audiences across the country.”

The current Suffs Broadway cast — entirely composed of female and non-binary actors — includes Taub as Alice Paul, Nikki M. James as Ida B. Wells, Jenn Colella as Carrie Chapman Catt, Hannah Cruz as Inez Milholland, Kim Blanck as Ruza Wenclawska, Ally Bonino as Lucy Burns, Nadia Dandashi as Doris Stevens, Grace McLean as President Woodrow Wilson, Tsilala Brock as Dudley Malone, Anastacia McCleskey as Mary Church Terrell, Emily Skinner as Alva Belmont/Phoebe Burn, Laila Drew as Phyllis Terrell/Robin, Jaygee Macapugay as Mollie Hay, and Hawley Gould as the alternate for Alice Paul.
