'Swept Away' to close on Broadway
The survival adventure musical, featuring folk rock songs by The Avett Brothers, will play its final performance at the Longacre Theatre later this month.
UPDATE: Swept Away on Broadway has announced a two-week extension and will now close on December 29.
The voyage is coming to an end. Swept Away will play its final Broadway performance at the Longacre Theatre on December 15.
Swept Away follows four men's quest for survival after their whaling ship wrecks, forcing them to confront just how far they'll go to stay alive. The show has an original script by Tony Award winner John Logan, inspired by the 2004 concept album Mignonette by The Avett Brothers. It also features additional music from the folk rock band's catalog.
Before coming to Broadway, Swept Away played at Berkeley Rep in California and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. The same main cast has led all three productions: Tony winner John Gallagher Jr. as Mate, Tony nominee Stark Sands as Big Brother, Adrian Blake Enscoe as Little Brother, and Wayne Duvall as Captain.
"The Avetts' musical style — rich with banjos, acoustic guitars, and harmonies — is akin to the rhythmic energy of a toe-tapping sea shanty," New York Theatre Guide's Swept Away review reads. "Their songs' themes of brotherhood, faith, and redemption align with the camaraderie and high hopes of sailors at sea."
At the time of closing, Swept Away will have played 52 Broadway performances.
“We are deeply proud of this beautiful production and the years of work that it took to get to Broadway," the Swept Away producers said in a joint statement. "We will forever be indebted to our fantastic creative team, our loyal actors and all of our co-producers and in turn their investors, for believing in this production and taking a risk on new work.”
