'The Kite Runner' to play limited Broadway engagement in summer 2022
The show will begin performances at the Hayes Theatre in July.
The Kite Runner is taking flight across the pond! The stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's bestselling novel, which was last seen in London's West End in 2016 and 2017, will now debut on Broadway at the Hayes Theater. Performances begin July 6 ahead of a July 21 opening night, and the limited engagement of The Kite Runner will go through October 30.
The Kite Runner is set in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2001, when the Taliban is seizing control and the country is on the verge of war. The story is narrated by Amir, who grew up in Afghanistan in the 1970s. He has since settled in America and established a new life there, but remains haunted by a betrayal he committed against a friend, Hasan, when he was a child. The play shows the children as partners in a kite-flying tournament before the incident tore them apart, and it shows Amir as an adult as he travels back to Kabul to make things right with Hasan.
The play made its world premiere in 2009 at San Jose Repertory Theatre and went on to success in the UK. A London production, directed by Giles Croft, received a WhatsOnStage Award nomination for Best Regional Production in 2014, and the show then went on to run in London's West End for two theatre seasons.
Matthew Spangler adapted Hosseini's book for the stage, and Croft returns to direct. Casting will be announced at a later date.
