Tina tells the story of how Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock, went from a humble church singer in Nutbush, Tennessee to the star of the Ike & Tina Revue, and finally to a solo artist who trailblazed a legendary career after breaking free from her abusive husband.
Tina: The Tina Turner Musical has been rollin' on Broadway since 2019, when the show arrived at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre after premiering in London's West End. In a four-star New York Theatre Guide review, our critic said, "In the case of Tina -- which tells of her own submission but then defiance of her abusive mentor and husband Ike ... there's a strong dramatic spine that makes it feel particularly earned and respected, and a necessary release for the audience, too."
Adrienne Warren played the Queen of Rock and Roll and won the Tony Award for her performance. Nkeki Obi-Melekwe, who played Tina in the West End, now performs the role on Broadway, with Kayla Davion as Tina at some performances. The principal cast also includes Nick Rashad Burroughs as Ike, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Zelma, Tony Award nominee Myra Lucretia Taylor as Gran Georgeanna and Jessica Rush as Rhonda.
The creative team includes direction by Tony Award nominee Phyllida Lloyd; choreography by Tony Award nominee Anthony van Laast; book by Katori Hall (Tony Award nominee and Pulitzer Prize winner), with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins; set and costume design by Tony Award nominee Mark Thompson; musical supervision, additional music and arrangements by Nicholas Skilbeck; lighting by Tony Award nominee Bruno Poet; sound by Tony Award nominee Nevin Steinberg; projection design by Tony Award nominee Jeff Sugg; orchestrations by Tony Award nominee Ethan Popp; wigs, hair, and makeup design by Drama Desk Award winner Campbell Young Associates; and music direction by Alvin Hough Jr.
