‘Dear Evan Hansen’ movie gets 2021 release date in cinemas
The Tony Award-winning musical will be seen on screens from September 24.
A release date for the movie musical adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen has been found. The film will be released in cinemas on Sept. 24, 2021, available to stream via home entertainment services 17 days after — Oct. 11, 2021.
According to Variety, Dear Evan Hansen is likely to keep its fall 2021 release date due to an early premium video-on-demand agreement. In securing this, Universal Studios can now debut movies on home entertainment systems after 17 days, without fear that movie theaters will boycott the film's release.
Based on Steven Levenson's book, Dear Evan Hansen follows Evan Hansen, a high schooler who gets wrapped up in his own lies after kickstarting a movement to remember his classmate Connor Murphy. Music and lyrics are by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, with songs including "Waving Through A Window" and "You Will Be Found".
Ben Platt reprises his Tony Award-winning performance as Evan Hansen, originating the role in the Broadway production. Casting includes Julianne Moore as Heidi Hansen, Kaitlyn Dever as Zoe Murphy, Amy Adams as Cynthia Murphy and Danny Pino as Larry Murphy.
After a world premiere in Washington D.C and an off-Broadway transfer, Dear Evan Hansen opened at the Music Box Theatre in November 2016. The musical won six Tony Awards, including Best New Musical, with Broadway performances currently suspended.
Dear Evan Hansen is in cinemas from Sept. 24, 2021.
