About David Byrne's American Utopia

David Byrne's American Utopia is at St. James Theatre from September 17. David Byrne's American Utopia tickets are on sale soon.

David Byrne's American Utopia originally landed on Broadway for a strictly limited engagement at the Hudson Theatre from October 4, 2019.

American Utopia is the seventh solo studio album by celebrated singer-songwriter David Byrne, which was released on March 9, 2018, hitting #3 in the US Billboard charts and featuring the single "Everybody's Coming to My House." Since the album's release, Byrne has been touring internationally with a show that NME describes as "the most ambitious and impressive live show of all time." The production, which blurs the lines "between gig and theatre, poetry and dance," has now found a home on Broadway in the heart of New York City, offering fans a unique evening at the theatre in celebration of not only American Utopia, but also of Byrne's extensive back catalogue of hits.

He is, of course, perhaps best known for his days as the frontman and guitarist of the American new wave band Talking Heads, who were active from 1975 through 1991 and spawned such hits as "Psycho Killer," "Life During Wartime," and "Once in a Lifetime." To theatre fans, however, Byrne is probably most admired for his work on Here Lies Love - a disco opera charting the life of former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, that played to great acclaim at New York's Public Theater (winning five Lucille Lortel Awards) and London's National Theatre (earning three Olivier Award nominations, including "Best New Musical").

Byrne's other work in theatre includes Secret Life of Humans at 59E59 Theaters, Joan of Arc: Into the Fire at the Public Theater, and The Catherine Wheel on Broadway, among others. And aside from his Drama Desk, Obie, and Outer Critics Circle Awards in theatre, his long list of accolades also includes an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Grammy Award for the 1987 film "The Last Emperor."

David Byrne's American Utopia is a must-see for all Talking Heads and new wave fans and for all those who embrace innovative ways of fusing together the pulsating worlds of theatre and music.

David Byrne's American Utopia has won a special Tony Award, honoring outstanding productions. Find out more here. David Byrne's American Utopia is also nominated for six 2021 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Music Direction.

Absorbing, Clever, Enchanting, Entertaining, Great Singing

See it if you like David Byrne's music and his message; like a minimalistic approach to a show

Don’t see it if you don't like Byrne; if you expect extravaganza or an over the top Broadway show/concert

Ambitious, Great Musicianship, Great Singing, Great Staging

See it if weird avant-garde productions are your jam; you love David Byrne

Don’t see it if you’re looking for a traditional theatre experience with characters and a plot. It’s more of a concert.
